Biodiversity

Biodiversity is key to maintaining a healthy, balanced environment that benefits both nature and people in the UK.

A diverse range of tree species is less vulnerable to pests and diseases. When trees are too uniform (monoculture), a single pest or disease can wipe out entire populations. Biodiversity reduces this risk and promotes ecological resilience.

At NPC Tree Surgery, we go beyond traditional tree management by actively enhancing treescape biodiversity. Through careful planning and expert conservation techniques, we create and maintain vital habitats that support a wide range of wildlife, ensuring the health of our landscapes now and for future generations.

One of the key ways we do this is through the veteranisation of mature trees. By carefully modifying selected trees to mimic natural aging, we create essential features such as hollows, crevices, and decaying wood—ideal for bat species that rely on these spaces for roosting, breeding, and hibernation. This process helps sustain bat populations while maintaining the overall balance of the ecosystem.

To support other wildlife, we install bird boxes and dormouse houses, providing safe nesting and sheltering spaces where natural habitats may be lacking. These small yet impactful additions help protect vulnerable species and encourage biodiversity within tree landscapes.

We also create reptile hibernacula, specially designed shelters made from logs, stones, and soil. These structures provide safe winter refuge for species like slow worms, grass snakes, and common lizards, helping them thrive year after year. In addition, we build beetle stumperies, using decaying wood to attract wood-boring beetles and other invertebrates that play a crucial role in nutrient recycling and forest health.

By integrating these specialist habitat enhancements into our tree management services, we ensure that each project not only meets practical needs but also supports the wildlife and ecosystems that depend on our treescapes. Through thoughtful conservation and expert care, we help create healthier, more resilient environments for both nature and the communities that enjoy them.
